Filip said he hadn’t touched Liana, and I believed him. I was surprised at the warm flood of relief that melted the hard pit in my stomach. As I lay in bed the night before, I realized that going to the Omega had been a cowardly attempt at escape. It had been more about my fear of telling Filip about my past than anything else—avoiding the threat of my evolving emotions and potentially opening up to Filip. My response to his emotional admission only confirmed that I’d been lying to myself. I’d been elated when he confessed his feelings for me.

Over the past week, I’d been so concentrated on avoiding my fears that I hadn’t considered what it would truly be like to lose him. The sight of Filip with Liana had rocked me to my core. And once he explained his motivations, it was hard to blame him for his actions.

So, where did that leave us? We were going to see where a relationship between us could go, but that still left so many questions unanswered. The most crucial on my mind was whether I could share my past with him. If telling him the truth would remove the main obstacle between us, would it be so terrible to tell him? What would be the worst that would happen? He’d reject me, and I’d be no worse off than if I had walked away on my own.

I didn’t like the prospect, but it wasn’t so terrible as it had seemed a week before.

Filip was adamant about his feelings for me. The least I could do was trust him with the truth and give him the opportunity to respond without making my own assumptions. I didn’t think he’d outright reject me; that wasn’t the heart of my fear. I worried he’d think I was damaged, and I couldn’t stand for him to coddle me. I didn’t want to see my past reflected in his eyes every time he looked at me.

Deep down, I knew I needed to tell him, but I also needed a boost of encouragement. I wasn’t normally the type to seek out advice, but when Giada asked to do lunch on Sunday, I decided she might be able to help me sort my feelings. She’d spent a good deal of time with him when he was assigned to protect her, so she just might understand my predicament.

We got a booth at a quaint little diner, and I kept my conversation light at first to keep her from being suspicious. When the opportunity presented itself to inject a harmless question, I jumped at the chance.

“I was curious. What are your impressions of Filip?”

Her eyes lit up like a kid spotting an Easter egg. “I knew something was up with you two.”

“There’s not. I was just curious after seeing him with that woman.”

“Whatever. I was surprised she could still walk out of there considering the daggers you shot her direction all evening.”

Oh, God. Had I been that obvious?

“I was just annoyed that he brought some stranger with him to a family dinner.
